Miles Davis Birth Of The Cool captures the sessions that marked a decisive shift in post-war jazz. Emerging from his time with Charlie Parker, Davis sought a more measured, melodic approach, developed through close collaboration with arranger Gil Evans and a circle of forward-thinking players. Recorded across 194950 for Capitol, these sessions introduced the Miles Davis Nonet, whose expanded line-up including French horn and tuba brought a subtle, chamber-like quality to the music. With contributions from figures such as Gerry Mulligan, Lee Konitz and Max Roach, the recordings balance tightly structured arrangements with fluid improvisation. Drawing on classical influences as much as jazz, Birth Of The Cool stands as a defining statement of a new, more restrained sound that would ripple through the decades. This mono Tone Poet Vinyl Edition was produced by Joe Harley, mastered by Kevin Gray (Cohearent Audio) from the original analog phono reel master tapes, pressed on 180g vinyl at Record Technology Inc. (RTI), and packaged in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket featuring session photos.
