The second of only two historic recordings free jazz pioneer Cecil Taylor cut for the Blue Note label following Unit Structures (also in 1966), Conquistador! finds the gifted pianist in an inventive sextet with the likes of Bill Dixon (trumpet), Jimmy Lyons (alto saxophone), Henry Grimes / Alan Silva (bass) and Andrew Cyrille (drums) performing a pair of extended compositions in the form of the near 18-minute title track and 19-minute plus With (Exit). After the release of Conquistador! Taylor rarely performed in the studio environment again as leader, but continued to release a series of celebrated live albums throughout the remainder of his uncompromising career.
