‘Nevermind’ and its breakthrough opening single ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ were still a few months away from release at the time of Reading Festival 1991. By the time they returned on 30th August, 1992, Nirvana were a multi-platinum sensation and the biggest thing in rock music for an entire generation. ‘Nevermind’ had begun a five-year run on the Billboard 200 that would see them sell ten million copies in the US alone.
No one could have known that this performance would be Nirvana’s last in the UK, and yet it lives beyond that and remains one of the greatest live performances in history.
