Description
This 1958 session is one of drummer Art Blakeys rarest projects dedicated to percussion and probably the best. Blakey leads a great jazz and percussion band made up of Art Taylor and Philly Joe Jones on drums, Donald Byrd on trumpet, Ray Bryant on piano and on percussion no less than Ray Barretto, Sabu Martinez, Victor Gonzales, Julio Martinez, Chonguito Vicenten and Fred Pagani Jr. The result is a rich combination of African and Latin rhythms with the hard bop style of the late fifties.
Personnel: Art Blakey (drums, chanting), Donald Byrd (trumpet), Ray Bryant (piano), Wendell Marshall (bass), Philly Joe Jones (drums, chanting, vocal), Art Taylor (drums), Sabu Martinez, Ray Barretto, Chonguito vencente, Victor Gonzales, Andy Delannoy, Julie Martniez, (bongo, congas), Fred Pagani (timbales), Austin Cromer, Hal Rasheed (chanting)
