Three years after it first landed as a digital download, Lance DeSardi’s superb The Gods Must Be Angry EP finally makes it to 12 inch vinyl on Legwork Records. Combining three tracks that have been doing the rounds with some of the heaviest-of-the-heavy house DJs with a brand new vinyl-exclusive cut, this is an essential minimal and tech house 12 inch for DJs and collectors alike — a balanced mix of headiness and body-jerking funk across four superb productions.

Side A sports the two original cuts from the 2023 digital release. ‘Stop Start’ is a deep, dubby, rolling and trippy workout — a knowing nod to the dominant West Coast house sound that the London-based Texan contributed to during his time living in San Francisco, where DeSardi was a key figure in shaping that city’s underground minimal and tech house scene. Alongside it, ‘Zeus’ takes a more muscular approach — sub-heavy, groove-driven and built to move bodies on a serious sound system.

Side B opens with ‘Yagota’ (originally titled ‘Yagota Bleep’), a tactile, loved-up chunk of drifting early morning deepness that first appeared digitally last year. Closing the EP, ‘What I Know’ is a previously unreleased vinyl-only exclusive — a dirtier, tech-tinged and mind-mangling workout that provides an alternate perspective on Lance DeSardi’s trademark sound and makes this pressing an unmissable acquisition for serious collectors of minimal vinyl and tech house records.
