The Conversation / Currency is the latest carefully curated reissue from cult Californian imprint Pacific Coast House Recordings, a label originally operative in the early-to-mid 2000s and now back with a series of essential archive releases for a new generation of minimal, tech house, prog and deep house vinyl collectors. Pressed on striking orange vinyl, this is a split 12 inch that pairs two exceptional and previously hard-to-find cuts — one a West Coast deep house classic, the other a near-mythical obscurity finally receiving its first full official release on wax.

On the A-side, label stalwart ‘Big’ Sam Robson aka The Coastal Commission delivers ‘The Conversation’, recorded in the early 2000s at the legendary PCH studio The Hall of Records on the edge of Hollywood’s Melrose Avenue. Dreamy, tech-tinged, effects-laden and pleasingly spacey, with deliciously dubby bass and plenty of out-there noises, it is quintessential West Coast deep house of the period — and one that still sounds remarkably fresh and current despite its vintage.

Flipping to the B-side, Argentinian producer Boing delivers ‘Currency’ — a cut that initially appeared on Robson’s 2005 Pacific Coast House mix CD but has never before been officially released on wax. Previously available on just ten white labels, it was a long-standing secret weapon of legendary DJ Doc Martin, and word has it the Wiggle boys hammered it alongside Swag lad Grant Dell. Similarly dubby and intergalactic in tone, ‘Currency’ boasts more propulsive beats and gorgeous dub techno-inspired synth riffs — a massive bassline, wiggly bleeps splashing in and out, before a monster synth line lifts you clean to the rafters.

An absolute gem and an essential addition to any collection of minimal vinyl, tech house records, prog house vinyl and deep house 12 inches. Run, don’t walk.
