Arctic Monkeys’ fifth studio album is a wickedly seductive record, draped in black leather and wielding a switchblade. After years of shapeshifting — from pointed indie to sun-stroked desert rock to whimsical psychedelic pop — AM is the sound of a band arriving at something completely assured.
The thick grooves underpin everything. Unfaltering drumbeats and dark basslines dripping with fuzz create a sense of dread and paranoia — chest-rattling, Black Sabbath-adjacent heaviness offset by Jamie Cook’s guitar flexing over hip-swaying rhythms. Even through the Motown swing of Snap Out Of It, the G-Funk of Why Do You Only Call Me When You’re High or the Velvet Underground melodies on Mad Sounds, the atmosphere stays haunted.
Turner’s voice is demonically possessed. On R U Mine?, One For The Road and I Wanna Be Yours, he is joined by a chorus of fellow doomed souls. AM is darker, sexier and more fully realised than anything Arctic Monkeys had done before. Play it after midnight.
