Produced by Chris Eckman from the wonderful Walkabouts, this marvellous album was criminally overlooked and ignored upon its original release. A sparse, achingly lovely sound, minimalist and emotional, with the rich voice of Paul Flaata, gripping and atmospheric. Mercy of Maria is simply stunning, and will make you weak at the knees, its dark beauty complete with ethereal organ, reminiscent of the doom ridden Scott Walker. With a stripped down sound that still manages to be both gothic and and evocative, this album will just creep into your musical psyche and beguile you with repeated listenings. The album reeks of personal tragedy and desperate hopelessness, yet manages to be so uplifting and rewarding in its very catharticity.
A must-have for lovers of Buckley(both of them!), Cohen, Cave and Scott Walker .
