Taken from the classic 1975 album Stepping Into Tomorrow, ‘Think Twice’ remains one of Donald Byrd’s most iconic recordings. Produced by the legendary Mizell Brothers, whose credits include work with Gary Bartz, Bobbi Humphrey, Marvin Gaye and Michael Jackson, the track combines warm jazz instrumentation, soulful vocals, rich synthesiser textures and Byrd’s unmistakable trumpet work. Over the years it has become one of the most sampled tracks in music history, inspiring countless hip hop, house and soul producers.
On the flip, ‘Where Are We Going?’ is lifted from Byrd’s landmark 1973 album Black Byrd, one of the best-selling releases in the history of Blue Note Records. Produced by Larry Mizell and Larry Gordon, the track perfectly captures the sophisticated blend of jazz-funk grooves, soulful melodies and uplifting arrangements that made Byrd one of the defining artists of the era. Its influence extended far beyond jazz circles, later inspiring interpretations from artists including Marvin Gaye.
