One of the ways to best appreciate the impact of the live set captured on this disc is to put yourself in the shoes of the two bands that followed L7 onto the Hollywood Palladium stage on 17 May 1991. Headliners, the Butthole Surfers and main support Redd Kross were both established mainstays of the punk underground scene. Both bands enjoyed healthy reputations and the kind of profiles that would shortly see the Surfers follow Redd Kross in scoring a major label deal. Although these groups were secure in their popularity any sense of complacency they may have been harboring would have been instantly vaporized by an opening band that simply turned up, rocked hard and said, follow thatL7s debut at the Palladium cemented the band-that by now was receiving international attention- as being one of the most exciting alternative live acts of the day, a reputation that grew slowly since the release of their eponymous debut album three years earlier. This concert on the heels of Smell The Magic (which comprised the bulk of L7s Hollywood Palladium set) provided empirical evidence of their heavyweight credentials. Less than two months after this recording, Sub Pop would issue an expanded edition of Smell The Magic, featuring three additional tracks. These included Packin A Rod, the live cut of which serves to demonstrate the unique way that L7 could traverse the sonic spectrum between punk and rock, apparently at EXPORT TO THE USA
