In July of 1960, Max Roach and Charles Mingus – in search of fair treatment for African-American performers – organized a “rebel festival” to coincide with the prestigious Newport Jazz RAY Festival. Roach’s celebrated LP, “We Insist! Freedom Now Suite” (with lyrics by Oscar Brown Jr.), is fuelled by the energy of the civil rights movement.
