Description

Nikolaus Harnoncourts career as a conductor of both orchestral works and opera encompasses Viennese Classicism, the Romantic repertoire and works from the 20th century. With the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras, Harnoncourt constantly reinterprets and rediscovers the grand repertoire of orchestral works: the concertos and symphonies of Haydn and Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Dvorák and Bruckner, but also the works of Bela Bartók and Alban Berg.

When Harnoncourt died in March 2016, the music world lost one of its most influential conductors. A star in his field, he always displayed the characteristic passion and fiery intensity that identified him, first and foremost, as a true servant of his art. Deutsche Grammophon commemorates the first anniversary of his death in March 2017 with a reissue of this legendary recording on 180g vinyl, including original repertoire notes by the conductor from the 1964 LP release, notes about musical sources and the period instruments, with sung texts and translations in English, German and French. A voucher for digital download is also included.
