Although not in chronological order, ‘From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah’ offers fans the opportunity to follow Nirvana’s progression through their rapidly evolving live activities. With Chad Channing still behind the drum kit, the first tracks (London Astoria, December 1989, with Nirvana supporting Mudhoney and Tad) show the raucous Bleach-era line up reaching an early peak, with near-existing versions of later ‘Nevermind’ classics “Polly” and “Breed.” At the other end of the spectrum, monumental versions of “Heart-Shaped Box,” “Milk It” and the already ferocious “Scentless Apprentice” attest to the power of the band’s later In Utero line up, bolstered by future Foo Fighter Pat Smear on second guitar.
‘From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah’ proved that Nirvana were as popular as ever almost three years after losing Cobain. The album reached #1 on the Billboard 200 and quickly went multi-platinum. Rousing releases like Live At Reading and the recent Live And Loud have since added to Nirvana’s posthumous live discography, but From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah remains a must-have title that, as Rolling Stone so aptly put it, “proudly resurrects the fury, raw power and incredible songwriting that were all but buried under the onslaught of analysis following Kurt Cobain’s untimely death.”
