“We were young, we were free, we were wild as the weeds” Chesnutt sings at the end of the eight-plus minute magnum opus ‘Splendid’ before giving way to a haunting guitar motif and repeating “we did everything we could” until you wonder who he is speaking to, the listener or himself. His voice is original, soulful and full of promise one minute and despair the next. His songs are caustic, claustrophobic, emotion filled slices of dark Americana, as beautiful as they are sad.
